Leaving the Country
Travel bargains can be found outside the US, which is sometimes
cheaper than staying inside borders. But the smart intercontinental
traveler will need to have some things squared-away for last-minute
travel deals. Major European cities will try and attract visitors
during the winter months, the same as US cities. Tourism is low and
the advantage is fewer long lines at some of the major venues and
sights.
Online travel brokers like Travelocity, Expedia, and Orbitz advertise their
big sales upfront, and usually have at least one or two outside
the country, not including cruises. Some stipulations will require
a week advance booking, but look for their “Last Minute” navigation
button on their site, too, that offers plenty of getaways in a
variety of economical packages.
Have a passport on hand. Nothing is worse than losing sleep wondering
whether your “rush” passport will arrive in the mail
before your scheduled departure date overseas. Most passports can
be rushed to you within two weeks for an extra fee. In some cases
you will also need a visa, but this depends on your destination.
Again, check a website such as Travelocity or Expedia for in-depth
passport and visa information. You will also find links to country-specific
information, ie required immunizations and any travel advisories.
Travel with a certified copy of your birth certificate and make sure
your drivers license or identification is current and matches that
of your passport. As a backup, keep copies of your passport, birth
certificate and other important papers with a family member or close
friend. In the case of lost or stolen passports or other emergencies,
authorities can contact them for your information.
Staying in touch with loved ones is an important consideration,
too. Your everyday cellphone will be nearly useless abroad. Plan
ahead to purchase prepaid international calling cards. Or agree to
stay in touch via email. Many of the more metropolitan venues have
a significant number of internet-cafes where you can log on and stayed
connected.
