Taking the Whole Family

Last minute trip planning for the whole family might not take the mental wizardry you might imagine, though it takes some effort to organize the details surrounding your family’s daily business: pet accommodations, and school, sports, and career obligations. Different scenarios can occur when trying to coordinate many interests.

If you have a trusted travel agent and a deal that fits your family’s “last minute” budget, you might just opt for letting the agent make all the arrangements. That frees you up to get the laundry done and packed, necessary bills paid, and finances in order. Let your credit card company know your travel plans so they are not suspicious when multiple purchases are made from a different location than normal. Many companies have security checks in place to guard against identity and credit card thefts, which include verification calls to the cardholder, and in some instances, declining purchases.

How will you care for the family pet? “Last minute” used to mean frustration in locating accommodations for pets. Today, not only are there many more options in the way of kennels, but most towns are home to businesses that cater to pets’ comfort, where your pet can remain in its own home environment. Should your quick getaway cover a major holiday, though, you might find that many of these pet specialists’ schedules are booked. Depending on the competition within your market, others may be available on shorter notice. If you have time, ask your veterinarian to recommend one. The yellow pages are another resource to finding a pet sitter; just make sure to ask for customer testimonials, any accreditations, and appropriate insurance coverage.

Regardless of the mode of your trip’s transportation, the bulk of your family’s luggage will be stowed and unavailable. A few extra minutes dedicated to carefully considered backpacks will translate into frustration-free traveling with the kids. Plan for each child except infants to have a backpack. Pack a few smaller games, books, and drawing supplies, some handy snacks, and drink singles into each child’s bag. Include a toothbrush and change of underwear. Keep these bags accessible during travel.

When choosing accommodations, consider whether you or your spouse or partner will be taking work. A family suite with kitchenette and sitting area or even adjoining rooms might be more comfortable for a working adult. Make sure rooms are available that offer internet access and ask about wireless hot spots available in the area.
